How to Install Google +1 on Volusion Ecommerce Stores

Today, Google has officially released the Google +1 for websites.  Previously it was only available for Google’s SERPs (search engine result pages).  In today’s article we’ll show you how to install it on your Volusion store.

Google +1 – What Is It?

Google +1 Social Media Button

Google’s “+1” is their answer to Facebook’s Like button and is their push into social media relevance.  Announced back in March, the program is designed to help people recommend sites they like and think are “cool”.

Advantages Over Facebook’s Like Button

The distinct advantage the +1 program will have over its rival Facebook is the recommendations will show up directly within Google’s search results…provided you’re logged into your Google account.  Naturally you have a Google account already right?

You can bet that this is will become a factor in your organic rankings thereby making installation of “+1” essential for any Volusion store or other ecommerce store.  Google has also announced they will show within the Google Merchant product store as well.

The “+1” program has a lot of catching up to do with Facebook which has already surpassed over 2 Million likes but if anyone catch them its Google and for two very important reasons:

  • It will directly affect your Google organic, pay-per-click and product listings; and
  • It will be integrated with your Webmaster Tools allowing you to view metrics and see trends.

Tracking Performance in Google Webmaster Tools

From a SEO perspective, one of the value added features of Google’s new social tool is the ability to track and monitor how well the “+1” system is working for you.  It will naturally integrate with your Google Webmaster Tools account and provide some valuable metrics including:

  • How many “+1” annotated impressions you are getting on Google’s SERPs;
  • What your CTR (click through rate) is with those impressions; and
  • Your “search impact” with “+1”…that is, how many more clicks are you receiving by having the “+1” on your site;

Tracking Google +1 Metrics in Webmaster Tools

After you’ve added the Google “+1” to your site you will be able to begin to see those metrics in a few days after installation.

You can now control your “+1” preferences within your Google Account Settings and either allow or disallow whether to share your “+1” activity:

Installing on Volusion

Installing the Google +1 in your Volusion store is very straightforward:

  1. Navigate to Google’s site code generator page;
  2. Choose your desired settings;
  3. Copy and paste into a displayable product field in Volusion;

Advanced “+1” Options

As you’ll notice there are several fields that allow you to further customize how your new button works:

How to Configure the Google +1 Button

  1. Include Count: determines whether or not to display the number of people who have given your site a “+1”;
  2. Parse: an advanced function that will explored in another post;
  3. JS Callback Function: again, another advanced function you will probably never need;
  4. URL to +1: here is where you can enter the URL you want to receive the “+1”;

All the above options are optional so if you want to make it as simple as possible, simply copy this code into Volusion:

<script type="text/javascript" src="https://apis.google.com/js/plusone.js"></script>
<g:plusone></g:plusone>

“+1” Button Sizes

You can change the look and feel of the Google buttons as well:

How Google Determines the URL

Google uses the following rules, in order, to determine the target URL of the “+1”:

  • The value of the href tag as defined in the script…or, if you are using the script generator then it’s the value you put in for “URL to +1”;
  • If there is no href reference then Google will check for the existence of the canonical tag;
  • Finally, if neither of those are specified then it will use the URL found in the JavaScript DOM: document.location.href.

[response_msg style="notice" title="Volusion Notice"]Due to this method, we strongly urge all Volusion stores to ensure they have properly implemented the canonical tag![/response_msg]

Where to Put the “+1” Button?

From a Volusion perspective I see 3 viable options for placement of the button:

  1. Product field Photo Sub Text;
  2. One of the five custom fields available for each product;
  3. Use a custom jQuery script to automatically locate it near your add to cart button;

The first two are easy and can be uploaded via a CSV file while the last option would require custom coding.  If you are interested in the last option (which is, in my opinion, the best option) please contact us.

Final Thoughts

From a search engine perspective, implementing Google’s new “+1” button is essential because of the added value of eventually affecting your organic rankings.  Because there are way more people who have a Facebook account than a Google account, Google’s new social media feature is not nearly as easy to use as the Like button.

You have to have both.

Think of Google’s button will affect your rankings while Facebook’s button can affect your conversion rate.

Facebook – The Ultimate Time Waster

Average User Spends 4x More Time on Facebook than YouTube

facebook-logo-smI know you spend a lot of time on Facebook, there’s no trying to deny it. And, Nielsen Online has confirmed that you spend, on average, 5 hours and 46 minutes per month on the addictive website. The previous measured average was 4 hours and 39 minutes. To put that into perspective that’s almost 4x as much as YouTube. When I look at the chart:

Destination

Unique Visitors

Time on Site

Facebook 103,886,000 5:46
Yahoo! 137,325,000 3:14
AOL Media Network 92,574,000 2:36
Fox Interactive Media 72,831,000 2:04
MSN/Bing 114,844,000 2:03
Google 149,673,000 1:53
Apple 58,719,000 1:18
YouTube 94,580,000 1:17
Microsoft 94,024,000 0:44
Wikipedia 58,846,000 0:17

A couple of things jump out at me…first of all…who the heck is spending all this time on Yahoo and AOL? Time to come clean people, what are you doing on these sites? Because I’m a SEO I use Yahoo a lot for understanding competitor’s links and where they are getting value but I do not know anyone who regularly uses those two destinations.

Secondly, if you are a business or a marketing expert you’d better be trying to figure out how to get more awareness inside the Facebook sphere. With so much time being spent there you’re missing the #1 internet destination if you’re continuing to ignore it.

Filter Recent Friend Comments in Facebook

New Facebook Prototype Apps Filters Friends Comments

recent-comments-application-logoAs your friend list grows, there may be times you would like to filter your Facebook news feed or wall posts to only show comments made by your friends and hide their friends’ comments, because let’s admit it…some of your friends are annoying! And I mean annoying in the nicest possible connotation.   Now with the new Recent Comments Filter application, you can do exactly that. The Recent Comments Filter is a Facebook Prototype application that you can install inside your account.  Prototypes are applications being developed by the Facebook development team and have not been officially released to the general public. They are not ready-for-prime-time but they are ready for you to test drive and explore what new features Facebook is thinking of launching.  As posted on the Facebook’s blog:
“Keep in mind that Prototypes are exactly that — unfinished versions of products we’re testing that may have some kinks to work out. Some Prototypes may eventually launch to everyone on Facebook and become part of the Facebook experience, while others may eventually be removed from the Prototypes directory all together. We won’t test every new product in Prototypes before launch, but we’re excited about testing new ideas regularly and often.”
If you decide to install the Comments App here’s what you will see: facebook-comment-app-prototype Clicking on the “Comments” button on your left navigation will filter your News Feed and highlight only comments made by your friends.  I really liked the quick filtering and I could easily see where I wanted to drill down for more details about comments my friends made.  To toggle back to the normal view simply press “News Feed.”

How to Install a Facebook Prototype Application

Installing a Facebook Prototype is straightforward:
  1. Log into your Facebook account
  2. Navigate your browser to the Prototypes page : http://www.facebook.com/apps/directory.php?app_type=6&category=0
  3. Find the Recent Comments Filter and click into the application
  4. Click Activate
Now, go back to your home page and you will have a “Comments” button on the top left of your page. If, at any time you would like to remove the application, return the Recent Comment Filter home page and click “Deactivate.” Enjoy!

Facebook Emulates Twitter with @Tagging Feature

Should Twitter Be Worried About Facebook’s New Feature?

facebook-logo-smOne of the most popular Twitter features, the @Mention, is about to be released on Facebook.  The new feature called tagging, will allow you to tag friends in your Facebook status and post updates.  @Mentions are heavily used within the Twitter world and Facebook has decided it now wants to capture some of that mojo. Prior to this update, people would normally tag friends within uploaded pictures or notes.  Now, with this release you’ll be able to mention them when writing updates or wall posts.
Tagging Your Friends in Facebook

Tagging Your Friends in Facebook

To tag someone in a post or update you simply will type the “@” symbol and then start typing the person’s name.  An AJAX reference box will appear allowing you to filter-as-you-type.  Once you’ve submitted your post or update, the @friend will get a notification they’ve been tagged. Facebook also mentioned it will roll this capability into applications in a future update. I would imagine Twitter can feel a slight chill in the air.

twitter-logo-smHow will this impact Twitter?

I believe this will slow down Twitter’s growth a bit but not too much.  Facebook will definitely get some Twitter-like benefits from this including:
  • More Conversational Interactions: To really get into Twitter you need to follow the @replies and watch the entire thread.  For those who  do, it can be quite engaging and interactive.  Previously in Facebook if someone mentioned you in a wall post or status update you would never know unless you happen to see that post or update (or you are subscribing to that friend’s updates).  With @tagging now you’ll immediately know and begin a conversational thread…expect Facebook usage to go up even more once people get the hang of it.
  • Update Twitter from Facebook: Many Twitter users have their tweets update their Facebook status but now you’ll be able to do the reverse.  One of the major objections I hear from Facebook users who are not on Twitter is that it seems redundant…and it is, somewhat.  With Twitter you usually do not control who follows you (there’s a setting for to control this) so there’s no filter.  With this update, I can reply on friend’s walls and statuses and send out a public Twitter update at the same time.  This is definitely something Twitter cannot do.
  • Increase Facebook App Development: Facebook has over 250 million users compared to Twitter’s 10 million.  This new feature will impact usability and further magnify people’s Crackbook addition that already exists.  I’m quite positive there are many savvy developer’s out there now brainstorming on how to leverage this…let the fun begin.
I still think Twitter is still better for the general public masses, especially from a business standpoint.  Facebook is great because it’s a closed system and I know I can control who sees what I want them to see.  But now there will be some blending of the two and I believe this is just the beginning of Facebook trying to capture Twitter’s core base. Yes, they should be worried…

Why Small Businesses Cannot Ignore Social Media

Do you believe social media isn’t relevant to your small business? Most small business owners I talk to fall into one of these three categories:

  1. They do not understand what “social media” is and is not; or
  2. They believe it’s not a real business tool and will fade away; or
  3. They believe their business cannot adapt and use social media tools

Sound familiar? Now watch this video to see the approaching social media storm…

If you are a small business owner or a SEO who works with them, this should be your wake up call. You may not think your business can be made into a video or that you have something original or unique to say…but you do. As a SEO it is your duty to be creative and generate new and different ways to engage with the social media crowd.

To summarize here are the major highlights:

  • By 2010, Generation Y will outnumber Baby Boomers
  • 96% of Gen Y have joined a social network
  • Social Media is now the #1 internet activity, taking over porn
  • If Facebook were a country it would rank as the 4th largest in the world
  • The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55-65 year old women
  • Ashton Kutcher and Ellen DeGeneres have more Twitter followers than the entire populations of Ireland, Norway, and Panama
  • People are moving away from e-mail as a form of communication
  • 34% of bloggers post opinions about products and brands
  • 78% of people trust peer recommendations more than advertisements
  • 35% of Amazon book sales are for the Kindle
  • Social Media is a fundamental shift in how we communicate

If you are a SEO, how are you helping and educating your clients on this shift? If you’re a small business owner, what’s your SEO doing for you?
