View Full Version : GWT and domain verification: with or without www?

Another question about something that was answered in the old forum, but I can't refer to my bookmarks.

When I verify my domain in Google Webmaster Tools, do I want to go with the www version or without? Does it matter?

Do both! :)

You should probably set it to display as www. though - that's the standard.

Thank you Dean.

Stupid question....where exactly do I upload the Google HTML verification file? When I FTP, where do I put it? I tried following the Volusion KB article and created a 301 redirect as instructed.

Google recommends the file upload verification method and Volusion recommends the meta tag method. Which should I do?

Use the meta tag method....worked for me...pretty simple as I recall:)

Thank you GGG.

You add the html version to your template and header files which you can find Design > File Manager

Thank you Gifty. Google instructions agree, add it to the header. Volusion instructions say add it to the Globally Amended Meta Tags under SEO (which is where I put it for now).

Is one way more advisable than the other?

Were you able to get the site verified, KKS? It's been a long time, but I think I followed Google's meta tag instructions for the header and just slammed it onto the template.

I don't really know if it matters how you verify it, just so long as you can verify ownership. Once done, you shouldn't ever have to bother with it again.

GGG, yes, I verified both with and without www and Google Webmaster Tools appears to be happy. I used the Globally Amended Meta Tags method.

Now I have to go to GWT University. :D
